Ten to twelve of his thirty-odd plays are among the best ever written. He wrote in masterpieces in all genres: tragedy, tragicomedy, history, comedy, and farce. Many of his over a hundred and fifty sonnets are considered among the best in the English language. He was popular in his own time, and has been revived continuously since his death except for the eighteen-year span when the Puritans closed all the theaters in England.

Perhaps because his works have lasted so long and have such broad appeal. Also because the man was a genius. His plays have layers of meaning that you don't get in most writing... and to write all of that in iambic pentameter. That's impressive.

He is also famous as a poet and is generally considered to be the greatest writer in the English language. He did not write in the Middle Ages or in Old English, but in the modern era (around 1600) in Modern English.
