How important was Ares to the Greeks?

Up until the battle of Thermopylae, the city-states of ancient Greece were constantly at war with one another. One city-state in particular, Sparta, focused heavily on War. At a young age of seven, Spartan boys would be taken from their homes and put to a very strict and brutal challenge in becoming a Spartan soldier. Many boys died before becoming soldiers. This meant the Spartan Army was considerably the strongest, as only the best were admitted to the ranks. It was at the battle of Thermopylae that the city-states finally put aside their differences and, for the first time, fought as a united country. And, even though they lost, it was because of that battle that the thousands of civil wars finally came to an end, and Greece entered the rest of the world as a single nation. Had that not happened, Greece would have remained an isolated region, bent on killing it's own people, and the legends, art, and knowledge of those ancient peoples would never have been introduced to the world.
