Best Answer

He is considered a hero because at the time, he was thought to have discovered a new land. Although this "new land" was already inhabited by people already. He thought of the natives as savages. After tricking the natives into helping him with his agenda of dominating the land, he then began a crusade which claimed the lives of thousands of natives.

Rather than teach the REAL history, our schools and government are much happier feeding the notion that he was a hero. This is not true in any way, shape, or form.

Christopher Columbus never even stepped foot on the soil of what we now call North America.
