Crazy Horse never wanted to have his picture taken. Even after all those fights, the government wanted to keep peace so they would take them to the city and show them around. Afterwords they would get their picture taken. Crazy Horse never wanted any of it. So the only picture today we have of him is a sketch that his sister described to an artist after he died.
Crazy Horse never became a chief in the strict sense of that word. Among all native American tribes the system of chieftainship was complex and recognised many different grades of chief.
Because he managed to count the required number and type of war achievements ("coups") in fighting against Shoshone, Crow and other native enemies he was made a war chief, which roughly equates to a very junior lieutenant in modern armies. This entitled him to become ogle tanka un, "a shirt wearer", meaning he could wear a decorated shirt bearing four beaded strips and hung with locks of hair. His authority was minimal and any Lakota warrior could choose to follow Crazy Horse into battle, or not.
Crazy Horse was in 1867 stripped of his title as a Shirt Wearer after a dispute involving another Lakota man's wife - at this point he was no longer a war chief and he lost the little authority he had held.
His courage, reputation and success in battle continued to earn him some devoted followers, but he was not any kind of chief when he fought at Little Bighorn in 1876.
