In the Middle Ages, there were far fewer people in the world, and more spread out. You might have had to walk (or ride a horse, if you were rich enough to afford one) for two or three days to get to a large town. That's a long time to travel just to, say, get your hoe sharpened. Meanwhile, who's going to protect your wife and children from the Huns?

So it would have been in your best interests to know how to fight, fix your tools, and farm. It would simply be uneconomical (and dangerous) otherwise.
