I read a book on him a long time ago. If I remember right, he was famous because he became ruler at an early age, and also married Catherine the great at an early age. He was known by being mental or handicap, he was also murdered. No one figured out who murdered him, but Catherine was tried and found guilty, although she never admitted it, but she also never denied it.

Peter the Great did many things for Russia. At the age of 10 he ascended to the throne with his sickly half brother as co tsar. When his brother died in 1696 he fully came to the throne at the age of 24. He started a full scale reform of the army, created a Russian navy, and created a new capital by building St. Petersburg. To do this he needed a northern port with an unrestricted passage to the Baltic, so this led to war with Sweden. By May 1703 he had secured the Neva River and began the Peter and Paul Fortress with the shipyard. The city he built grew out of a bog-land with the labor of more than 40,000 Swedish POW's and peasants. Over 25,000 died there building the city and contributing their bones to the foundation of the city. In 1712 St. Petersburg was named the capital of Russia and by the time of his death in 1725 there were over 40,000 living in the city he built. Today it is a modern colorful European inspired city of 141 islands with canals and sit along the Neva river.
