President Lincoln was opposed to the expansion of slavery in the western territories of the USA. The south felt he wanted to end slavery eventually in the southern states, so they left the union after he was elected. President Lincoln led the fight to bring them back into the union and end slavery in the USA once and for all. He also said that when the southerners come back into the union, it must be forgiveness and treat the southerns as Americans once again.

It wasn't important. The purpose of the Civil War was to preserve the Union, which inevitably ended slavery with the destruction of the Confederacy. Abraham Lincoln wasn't exactly someone who liked blacks, contrary to popular belief, in fact he belived that they should go colonize Panama if they were freed

Some say that slavery was what the Civil War was about. The South seceded from the union because they were worried Lincoln would free slaves.

There are arguements both ways

slaves were a major contributor because the southern states seceded (left the union) because Lincoln wished to abolish slavery in all of America, since these states left it caused more tension
