This tradition originated in German or Holland and my understanding the 1st "Christmas tree's" where hung upside down.

The custom of decorating rooms with evergreen twigs and branches goes back 600 years. This tradition later developed into Advent wreaths and decorated Christmas trees hung from the ceiling. It was not until the 17th century that Christmas trees were set up as they are today and decorated with homemade cookies, gingerbread, rosy red apples and tissue paper roses. Since then Christmas trees have been decorated in ever more creative ways.
