I think to illustrate compassion in war. The conflict of human nature, how one decision can cost so much in war however noble it's intentions.
Sure it was repaid, however that soldier killed Fish and the Captain in the end. Uppem saved his own life at the cost of 2 others....do you believe it was the right thing as the soldier was killed in the end anyway?
The German was technically a prisoner of war. Killing him would have amounted to a war crime. Only captured spies may be executed.
After being released he returns as an active combatant .
yes
The fact that he got shot! Otherwise the beach landing scene at the start and the sniper scene later are the two that stand out for me.
I think he uses a 30. caliber MG that he shares with private Mellish, based on the book In "Saving Private Ryan" - Pvt Adrian Caparzo (played by actor Van Disel) was a member of the infantry rifle squad and his weapon was the M-1 Garand both during the landings on the beach and in scenes later when he was killed by a sniper. They must first find Private Ryan which is not easy because there is a war on and he is a paratrooper who has been dropped somewhere behind enemy lines. After they find him, the task remains to keep him alive and deliver him safely to friendly lines. There is another unforeseen problem in saving him which arises toward the end of the movie, but I will not give it away.
1. save water, save life 2. save water it will save you later

Adolf Hitler fought, as a soldier, in the First World War for Germany 1916-1918, and he was later the German dictator 1933-1945.
Lt. Dennis Brotheridge of the Oxford and Bucks. Light Infantry was the first Allied soldier to die on D-Day. He also killed the first German on D-Day. Brotheridge landed with his 28 troops in a glider at 0016, near the Orne Bridge. At about 0020 they were challenged by a German sentry, 17 year old Private Helmut Rohmer. Brotheridge shot him with his Sten gun, and just a minute or two later was shot himself by a German machine gun. He died at 0023 on D-Day.

He was drafted in 1943 into the German anti-aircraft corps as Luftwaffenhelfer (air force child soldier) while in the seminary at the age of 16. In 1945 he deserted and returned home. As a German soldier, he was interned in a prisoner of war camp, but released a few months later at the end of the war in May 1945.

The German word for "later" is "später". Slues is spelled "Schluss" in German and means "the end; final, as in: time to quit"
Adolph Hitler served in the German Army from 1918-1918, first an an infantryman, and later promoted to a 'runner'. Wounded twice, he was awarded an Iron Cross, and promoted from PfC to "Gefreiter", which is roughly equivalent to a USMC Lance Corporal (E-3)
The first soldier to die in WWI was a soldier by the name of Albert Otto Walter Mayer, a German Calvary man, who was shot and killed on August 2, 1914, after delivering a fatal shot to what would be the second death in WWI, Jules Andre Peugeot. John Parr was the first British soldier killed in WWI. He was killed on August 21, 1914. He was killed by a German Sniper while he was with his partner. He and his partner were reconnaissance cyclists. They were sent up to the far front line slightly over the Belgium border to scout when they encountered a German cavalry patrol from the German First Army. Parr held off and distracted the German Army as long as he could while his partner rode back to the Middlesex Regiment to tell the commander what happened and where the enemy's position was. Private John Parr was shot by a German sniper. The Middlesex Regiment moved back to a village and Private John Parr's body was left where he fell. He was later buried in St. Symphorien Cemetery in France.

While private citizens in Germany did own guns, there have been many restrictions and limitations over the years. Prior to the start of World War 2, the German government began a program of registration, and later, confiscation of guns from private citizens. Citizens in Germany may own guns today, but again, with limitations.
