Origins of the Baptist church can be traced back to 17th century England, when people read The Bible in their own language, believed it, and aimed to live their lives by it during the Puritan-Separatist movement in the Church of England. Separate congregations were formed which required you to be a believer if you were to become a member; membership was confirmed through the process of baptism after a person converted and professed his or her faith. People opposed to the church nicknamed them 'Baptists' and the name stuck. Since then, it has given rise to General Baptists and Particular Baptists.

In England in the 16th century, the people wanted to worship freely and the king would not allow them to do so. As a result they went to America and started the Baptist religion so that they could worship as they please.
