It is of Roman origins. It is a very old flag and Cymraeg itself (Welsh language)

A White dragon and a Red dragon fought and the red one won. This legend also involves Emrys ( Merlin ) as a young boy.

The red dragon became the symbol of the Welsh nation through its adoption by the Tudor ancestors of king Henry VII.

Edmund and Jasper Tudor had a dragon as crest granted them by Henry VI.

When Henry Tudor faced king Richard III at the battle of Bosworth in 1485 he had three recognized battle standards. One of these showed "Red ffyry dragon peyntid upon white and Grene Sarcenet". (red "fire" dragon with raised forearm on a white & green background)

It is held that this dragon banner represented Henry Tudor's claim as a true representative of the ancient kings of Britain and was a tribute to the Welsh people who had made his victory possible.

The origins of the Red Dragon flag, or "y Draig Goch", date back to the Roman period, when the dragon (or draco) was used by Roman military at the time of the Emperor Trajan. After the Romans left, the Red Dragon remained as a key emblem of Wales. There are accounts of battles against the Saxons under the Red Dragon.

The Tudors adopted the Red Dragon, and the Welsh-born future Henry VII took to the battle of Bosworth Field under the Red Dragon standard.

During the reign of the last ruler of Wales to gain victory over England, Owain Glyndwr, legend states that aid was summoned by Glyndwr to help drive the English from the land, a red dragon rose from the mist, the English aggressors fled in terror. Legend states that if the Welsh are ever again in danger the dragon will wake and come to their aid. As a salute to this promise, the dragon is depicted on the welsh flag. A large statue is to be built near the city of Wrexham in wales depicting the dragon, with the aim to 'awake the dragon in the fight against cancer' all proceeds from this project are donated to the cancer research unit at the North Wales regional hospital in Wrexham.

The oldest recorded use of the dragon to symbolise Wales is from the Historia Brittonum, written around 820, but it is popularly supposed to have been the battle standard of King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders. During the reigns of the Tudor monarchs, the red dragon was used as a supporter in the English crown's coat of arms (one of two supporters, along with the traditional English lion)

The famous Welsh flag was recognized as the official flag of Wales, U.K. back in 1959. The red dragon has been a Welsh symbol for hundreds of years. It is a mascot of sorts for the Roman cavalry brought to the U.K. by the Romans.
