I don't know why it was written but the people who wrote it was my grandfather George Kuppler & A friend of his but I can't remember his name. They co wrote the song during WW1 while stationed in Georgia. My grandfather wrote the tune & his friend wrote the lyrics. They sold the song to A man named Burnie & I think his first name was Ben?He paid them $100.00 for the song & they split the money.I'm not sure who made the song famous by selling it to the Harlem Globe Trotters. It has been recorded & sung by many well known talent.

No. This distortion of history began with the 2004 movie Ray. The film has a scene in which Charles is met by a group of protesters outside the Bell Auditorium in Augusta, Ga. It is a fabrication. Charles canceled his appearance after receiving a telegram from students at a local black college. The promoter successfully sued Charles for breach of contract, but he was never banned from the state of Georgia. When the Georgia state legislature honored Ray Charles in 1979, they didn't apologize for banning him because he was never banned.
