The purpose of the Tower of London was to act as a royal power base in the City of London. It was also to provide a base where armed men, provisions and horses could be kept. It was to overawe and frighten the indigenous population of London. The tower of London provided a retreat for the Royal family in times of civil disorder and to protect London from invasion.
Originally it was intended to show the local population the power of the Norman invaders. Since then it has been a Royal Palace, menagerie, prison, fortress and armoury. Today, it still has a small military garrison, houses the Crown Jewels, is a museum and one of London's major tourist attractions.
