Why was the monastery the center of medieval life?

Medieval towns did not have cathedrals in them. In the earlier parts of the Middle Ages, the defining feature of a city was the presence of a cathedral. Later, a town could also become a city by getting a city charter, usually from a king, but the presence of a cathedral always made for a city.

The distinction between a village and a hamlet was similar; a hamlet never had a church, but a village always did. So the presence of a church was the defining feature of a villager.

Things that defined a town were the presence of multiple churches, a permanent market, or a town hall.

In medieval times, religion was the #1 central thing to life. Religion was your culture, your education, your beliefs, everything. These were sad times and people relied on religion to save them. And so they loved their church.

For two reasons: 1) The Church was, figuratively, the center of everyone's life in those times, and 2) All of the most learned and well-read men in the area were collected at the monastery.

Until the Age of Enlightenment, the clergy were invariably the most thoroughly educated people in Medieval society.
