Heiroglyphics was a system of writing, like in ancient Egypt, in which pictorial symbols are used to represent meaning or sounds or a combination of meaning and sound.

A later cursive version was developed called heiratic that was quicker to write.In the last centuries B.C. a more refined style, the demotic, replaced the hieratic.

Where the origin of most hieratic characters could be plainly seen in the hieroglyphics, the demotics bore no resemblance to the hieroglyphics from which they were taken

Basicly it was the foundation on which modern writing was built
