Fear.

The pope commanded his followers to burn Pagan temples to the ground and then build their own Christian churches on the same site, in an attempt to bring pagans to the Christian faith. They believed that people would simply change beliefs because the new churches were in the same location.

When that didn't work, they began to preach about the devil. He was said to be horned, cloven footed, and etc. He was identical in appearance and behavior to the Pagan God (the Hunter). It was believed that if they told us Pagans we were actually worshiping an evil being, we would stop worshiping him and start worshiping their version of God.

When that didn't work, they started preaching about our God being not only evil but ruling over a punishment filled afterlife called hell. If we didn't accept their beliefs we would end up in this hellish afterlife.

They did everything they could to scare Pagans away from their traditions and into their own Christian faith.
