Why were the Southerners so strongly in favor of maintaining a balance of free and slave states?

Answer:
Because they were keeping an uneasy eye on the industrial growth of the North and their domination of Congress, which was liable to pass laws that favoured the North.

ANSWER:

The reason Southerners demanded that the free and slave states be balanced was basically on the representation in Washington, DC.

Just like today, every state has two United States Senators. When it comes to how many representatives a state sends to the House of Representatives, is based on the population of the state, and the population that lives within the districts that are found in that state.

Southern states were determined not to let politicians from the free states or anyone who may want to end slavery, to have enough votes to end slavery in the South.
