the railroads brought with them people which caused settlements to spring up along the way. the most important aspect is that it allowed the west to open up, meaning trade could occur faster and more efficiently. cattle could be shipped as well as people for transportation, but primarily agricultural goods. railroad provided infrastructure to the west imagine Houston without highways!
The transcontinental railroad was important for westward expansion for an obvious reason. It made traveling west easier and cheaper. It also facilitated westward expansion in more subtle, but equally if not more important ways. The transcontinental railroad created a vast amount of jobs for people working on the railroads as well as for people working to feed, clothe, and house these railroad workers. The transcontinental railroad moved people west because it moved an industry west, and people follow the industry. The materials had to be extracted from the environment, so people went to work chopping trees and mining. The materials had to be transported to the railroad, so hundreds of smaller secondary railroads and engines were built to carry these to the present construction site. Lots of people were spurred on by the competition between the two railroad companies and two labor forces, so people moved west to watch. Basically, because of the railroad, the west was a place to be in.

One statement that is not true regarding the expansion of the railroads is that no laws were passed to regulate the railroads. This was during the expansion from 1860 to 1900. (A+) Railroad expansion took business away from the trucking industry.
One thing the government did to facilitate the expansion of the railroads was by giving land grants to railroad companies. The government also provided loans.
