I think they were built largely for show- as a symbol of wealth. Of course land is scarce in Manhattan, so there is an economic reason to go up if office space is needed.
It was actually the other way around. The name of the building was The World Trade Center, and it was casually called the twin towers. The nickname was due to the architecture of the building. It was had two sister towers that stood side by side.
It was a place in the United States for countries around the world to have a place to take their business to trade with other business in the U.S. Also it stood as a symbol of urban renewal in lower Manhattan.
They were large office buildings.
New York City is an economic hub of the US, and given that the US has the world's largest economy (although it is soon to be overtaken by China) that makes New York City very important in global economic terms. The World Trade Center (prior to its destruction) consisted of the two tallest office towers in New York, hence, while it was not literally the center of all the commerce in the world, it was important enough that with a little bit of poetic license, you could call it the World Trade Center.
The concept of a World Trade Center complex was to make more room to the financial center
because they new that a whole bunch of people were going to die in 2001
The World Trade Center stood as a symbol for American and Western prosperity and the exact sort of globalization that Islamic extremists hate.
World Trade Centers Association was created in 1970.
in the world there were only 2 world trade centers
There was a large attack on the world trade centers on that date, they were both destroyed.
