They just didn't understand them, and there was racism, xenophobia and religious bias. They had customs that the settlers didn't understand and attitudes and culture they thought were backwards. Then in time, the negative Propaganda become fueled more by greed. The settlers wanted them off the land and used various means to that end such as wars, murder, and indirect methods such as gifts of blankets contaminated with smallpox or laws that made their way of life more difficult. Nowadays, many of those who are left and with their ethnic identity intact often struggle with alcohol, drugs, and gambling addiction, all due in part to all the hardships inflicted on them by non-indigenous Americans. When you systematically attack a group of people and take their ethnic pride, they often turn to self-destructive behaviors.
