Why will a 1999 Geo Metro down shift hard?

[Edit]

Answer

Try adjusting the clutch.

Save your car

Never downshift to slow down, press the clutch and use the brake to slow down it will save your engine and clutch. Downshift to pass or to rapidly speed up but be sure to have the revs up higher than when you were in the higher gear.

Save yourself

You guys are freaking idiots. The AUTOMATIC transmission most likely downshifts hard because of a bad modulator and/or sensor in the transmission. Have it looked at by a COMPETENT transmission shop. Don't rely on a bunch of idiots who have too much time on their hands and reply to online posts with useless and/or incorrect answers.
