Most likely he has to turn the ignition on when he tows the car, to prevent the steering lock from activating. As you know, leaving the ignition on will reset the system, so by the time he's back at the workshop the problem has gone away by itself.

∙ 18y agoI heard that if you leave the keys in the ignition even if you turn the automobile off it will kill the battery. It's a habit some people have, I don't know if it applies here or not.
