Your lawn mower might not be getting any spark because you could of sheared the flywheel key which will off set the timing then giving no spark to fire the engine. Before you tear down in to the engine, look at the blade to see if there is any large dents or damage to the blade. If that is so, then you probley got a sheared flywheel key. Otherwise you might have a fawled spark plug or a rusted magneto, or maybe rust on the flywheel. Out of all those problems one of them is surley it. Good luck!
not entirely correct, a sheared flywheel key causes your spark to be off, it doesn't cause your spark to fail, also acording to small engine manufacturers rust will not effect the function of your magnet or laminates. a push lawn mower has a very simple electrical system (if it was made within the last 25 years) there is a brake switch a coil & a plug. the first thing a consumer should do is replace the spark plug, its cheap & simple. if that doesn't work. remove the cover to the top of your engine. there is a single green ground wire that gos to the coil, disconnect the wire, put the cover back on & check your spark again. if you have spark the problem is the brake, if you still don't have spark you need to replace the coil. make sure you gap it propperly if you replace it. a business card between the coil & the magnet usually works fine.
what are you trying to measure and with what type of meter? generally we check the module with a spark tester. if there is no spark with the spark tester we check the kill wires and any safety switches that may cause a no spark issue and if all that still shows no spark then we replace the module.
A good lawn mower spark plug will have just a small amount of brown deposit. In addition, the gap will be very close.

The spark plug gap for a Murray 12 hp riding lawn mower should be set at .020 inches. This is equal to .5 mm.
NO, lawn mower spark plugs and a car's spark plug are different lengths, heat range and gap. Even if it fits the threads for the hole you run a high risk of causing major damage to the engine.
