If you are using additional speakers then you may need to register them with your blu-ray player (you can do this from the blu-ray menu.)

Could be nothing more than the Bluray DVD's that you're watching aren't encoded in 5.1 surround.

Alternately, you can purchase a Blu-Ray Home Theatre system, which includes the BluRay player and receiver (1 unit), and matching speakers. The Sony BDVE systems are a good place to start.
