Totally depends on your operating system and the hardware your using. If you've got a fancy dock with speaker, remote, etc, etc, you will need drivers for it sometime you can get limited functionality but probably not. Check to make sure you have usb 2.0 or higher should work with lower grade but once again probably not. And try to plug the iPod into the dock first then the dock to your PC, this realy isn't very logical but who knows. Other than that if it isn't working and you have and have done all these things, you've got a hardware/software problem.

And it would help if you would state what OS your using when asking questions like this.

I tried for weeks to resolve this issue. I finally had to uninstall the iPod USB connection and then reinstall. That took care of it. Here are the instructions:

1. Click "Start"

2. Right click "My Computer"

3. Click "Manage"

4. Click "Device Manager"

5. Expand "USB Controllers" (click on the + sign in front to expand)

6. Plug in iPod to USB port

7. Right click on the iPod USB connection (mine had a yellow circle with a white"!" inside)

8. Click "Uninstall"

9. Click "OK"

The iPod I have booted right away. You may have to disconnect the iPod and then plug it back in to the USB port for the PC to recognize it.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

There are a number or reasons why your computer may not recognize your iPod. You may have a faulty cord for example.

Do you have Itunes? If not, you need to download that. If you do have Itunes, try having it running when you plug in your Ipod. Other than that, I have no idea.

Your iPod charges on your computer, but iTunes does not recognize it because of some dust or a slight fluid damage inside the connector.
