If you're asking why the gearshift won't release once you start the engine, it's probably a problem in the keyswitch mechanism that releases the gearshift.
If you're asking why the transmission won't shift into gear after you start the engine and put it in gear, it could just be low on Transmission Fluid or have a blocked filter, but most likely the transmission has failed and you'll need to take it to a shop. Check the transmission fluid, if the level is up, smell the fluid, if it smells burnt you have overheated a clutch. Sometimes that just happens when a transmission gets worn out.
Close ratios in transmission.
The shift cable for a 1998 Ford Expedition allows the transmission to be shifted throughout the available gears. It is linked directly from the shift lever to the side of the transmission.
it could be the shift linkage being that both gears over there wont work
well you say you have a 96 tempo well your the only one, Ford stopped makeing tempos in 1994!.
Ford Tempo was created in 1984.
Most likely it means the transmission is going out. This could be caused by a lack of transmission fluid or a complete failure of the system (judging from the minor incident to the major, respectively). I would get someone you trust or a mechanic to look at it to give you an evaluation. It is typical for older Ford cars to loose their ability to shift into gears. Good luck.
A Shift control soleniod for a exploer is in the transmission and controls the shift pressures for the trans. When bad you will feel a bang into gears. Very common problem on an exploer.
try adding trans fluid
Your 1995 Ford Escort might take a long time to shift between gears because the transmission fluid is low or very dirty. An automatic transmission requires the correct amount of fluid to operate properly.
My check engine light came on in my 2000 Ford zx2...It gave that code and said shift solenoid A. I did a little research and found out shift solenoids are only in automatic transmissions. They're like a chip that tells the transmission when to shift gears. So if your car is hesitating between gears, the solenoid may need replaced or there could just be a problem with one of the wires.
Mainly because the C6 transmission only has 3 gears and no overdrive.
my 89 ford tempo goes 85
