Could be a problem with the engine cooling fan , water pump , restricted radiator ,
any body else have any ideas ?
It could be your thermostat how is the fluid in your radiator?
Check your thermostat.
Check the coolant in the 96 Taurus. Check to insure that the thermostat is working properly, and that the water pump is working.
Check the thermostat. Another reason could be the head gaskets are blown.
Any brand of antifreeze can be used in a 2001 Ford Taurus such as Prestone. The antifreeze can be 50 50 antifreeze.
probably the heater core is clogged
you may need new water pump the cooling fins wear out a common cause.

i had a similar problem on a 97 ford taurus, not overheating but it would boil out the resivior, changed the theromstat, no help, took of the water pump and the impeller was rusted, almost gone, replaced it and it works good, also before changing it, the antifreeze was rust colored. hope this helps.
