Why would Aquarius be an air sign if it is the WATER bearer?

Aquarius is often mistaken for a water sign, due to its symbolism. Aquarius, however, has little to do with the realm of feeling which water signs deal with. Aquarius is part of the air triplicity (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). These signs deal with the intellect, ideas, social relationships and communication. Those of the air triplicity manifest strong mental proclivities, with a tendency to rationalize everything. They generally see emotions as illogical and feel uncomfortable with matters related to them. Aquarius is a representative of fixed air. Fixed signs are stubborn and stable. The Aquarius manifests this in their adherence to their own (sometimes very strange) ideas and ideologies, as well as their persistent need for freedom.

The civilizations of the Middle East that started creating the constellations of the Zodiac seem to have associated winter with rains or river-flooding so that Capricorn (the fish-tailed goat), Aquarius (the water-carrier) and Pisces (the fishes) all have watery associations.
However, the arrangement of Zodiac signs into "elemental" trigons is a separate (probably later) idea. Here the signs that are four apart are all put into the same "element", but the symbolism of the constellation and the elements rarely fits closely:
Water: Pisces, fishes, and Cancer, a crab, both have watery associations, but Scorpions are more associated with dry terrain.
Fire: What does any of the group have to do with fire? - Aries, a ram, Leo, a lion, and Sagittarius, a centaur-archer.
Air: Again no really obvious links - Gemini, twins, Libra, scales, and Aquarius, a water carrier.
Earth: Taurus, bull, does live on land, and Virgo is usually shown carrying an ear of wheat, but Capricorn's fishy tail hardly helps it on the mountains.
But the different sets of symbolism work in different ways, so it's best not to worry about the symbolism too much. Water is linked with emotion and Aquarius is considered to be one of the least emotional signs of the Zodiac, detached and idealistic.
And how come Taurus, a bull, is called a "feminine" sign of the Zodiac?

In Greek mythology Aquarius is said to represent Ganymede who was the son of the Trojan king Tros, taken to Mount Olympus by Zeus to be a cup-carrier to the gods.
