Why would a 97 Ford Taurus be stuck in park? In: Ford Taurus |
[Edit] |
Answer:
The Break On/Off (BOO) switch has caused this problem for me. It's the only way that the rest of the car knows that you're pressing your brakes, thusly not letting you shift or triggering your brake lights when it is loose.
I've rather big feet, so I've kicked it loose several times since it first happened. It's a cheap little plastic connector on the brake pedal itself.
- Follow the pedal up to the wiring.
- Ensure that everything is plugged in properly.
- If the BOO switch is plugged in and the problem is still present, then is the time to check the fuse box according to the manual. If you've never checked fuses for proper functioning, all you do is hold them up to the light to see that the connection is not broken within the fuse (ie, that the fuse is "blown")
Answer
the reason i found for this problem is ...brake lite switch on brake pedal out of alignment or is faulty can cause signals and hazzard lites to malfuntion..but if shifter moves you may have damedged lock pin in sterring column
Answer
(1) I think in most cars, it's necessary to depress brake pedal to shift. (2) You probably are already doing that since you have owned the car since 1969. If the car is still stuck in park then check if brake ligts come on when you depress it. If your answer is "NO", it's most definitely a blown fuse. Check fuse box on driver side. I think this mechanism is some kind of "protection" so kids don't accidentally shift it to drive.

Answer/Workaround
I have had this same problem, a workaround is to not shift the car into park but into neutral when stopping the engine (it takes some getting used to when you are so used to put it in park). In my case it was solves under the steering column where a wire had come loose from its contact, fiddling with the connectors and making them tighter did the trick.
