If your car hesitates when the brakes are applied, and or when you are driving it acts like it is giving itself gas, or accelarating on its own, The problem is your Throttle Position Sensor(TPS). It costs about $34.00 at autozone, and only takes about 10minutes to replace. sounds like you need a tune up. could possible be fuel filter or fuel pump. sounds like you need to replace fuel filter, air cleaner, and maybe a tune up

Are there particular circumstances when it hesitates? (engine hot or cold?, damp outside? certain speeds?, from a start?, etc. How many miles are on the car? Is the check engine light come on? When was the last fuel filter installed? When was the last time the throttle body was cleaned? or air induction service done? Open the hood, look at the back of the engine on the driver's side, is there oil seaping about 6 inches from the top of the engine? What did the spark plugs look like when you changed them? When were the wires last changed? Do you keep an eye on the oil level? Does it consume oil? What is the 8th digit of the vin? these answers will help.

Check for leaking hoses such as vacuum hose. Check the spark plug wires, are they connected properly, are they too old. take out all your spark plugs and check each one to see if they have enough gap at the end of it. not enough gap can cause a miss fire. do a fuel pressure check, with a fuel pressure gauge. if your car hesitates during start up, check you camshaft sensor. if you have a diesel car, check you glue plugs. its located beside spark plug

Many problems could cause the car to stop accelerating. If the engine is running OK, then check a manual transmission for clutch problems, and an automatic transmission for possible slipping bands.

Fuel injected cars have several sensors monitoring engine rpm, engine load, speed and throttle position allowing a computer to decide the correct amount of fuel for smooth acceleration..

Carbureted cars have the throttle connected more directly and simply dump fuel whenever the pedal is pressed, simple but effective.

ADDED: The answer is a little more complicated than the 2nd scenario and would take up much more space to explain. Suffice it to say that you should try running a can or two of carburetor cleaner through it via the gas tank, AND get a spray can of carb cleaner and thoroughly spray down the throttle linkage where it is mounted on the side of the carb to make sure that everything moves smoothly. See what happens after you've done this, and if it still is exhibitting the same problem take it to a mechanic that still knows how to work on and/or adjust carburetors, because iyou could have internal problems that might require a rebuild.

Not enough fuel, maybe because the fuel pump is not putting out enough pressure, or more likely and cheaper. Replace the fuel filter that is just above the transmission on the firewall.

The problem could be a number of things, including clogged fuel injectors, a fuel filter or air filter that needs replacing, or a computer problem.

Why does my car stall after ignition turned over?

Cars fequently stall, especially if they are a clutch. If your car is not a clutch, iIwould have a mechanic look at it. It could be a spark plug issue, and you don't want to mess around with that.

Why does your car stall when accelerating between 25mph an 40mph?

A car will stall when accelerating between 25 and 40 miles per hour due to a vacuum leak. When the cars computer cannot properly read the how much fuel to inject due to erratic air ratios the engine is prone to stall at random times.

What causes cars to stall when applying brakes?

If you have vacuum activated power brakes (big diaphragm) and you have a leak, this will cause 2 different symptoms. Some cars will notice a raise in the idle, and some cars will stall when you hit the brakes. Check the hose that is connected from the intake manifold to the power booster diaphragm for cracks.... Heat dries out hoses and plastic....and oil rots hoses that aren't designed to handle oil.
