Access is a database. Excel is a spreadsheet. Both are useful to displaying data systematically, but a database is enormously more flexible. Access is a relational database, which is even more flexible than an ordinary database and permits the data to be manipulated in many ways.

It does depend on your purposes. Excel is by far the better if you need only a single table, or if you need to embed a lot of mathematical formulae in the spread-sheet - though MS has ruined what had been its nearly-good graph routines. A database table looks like a spread-sheet page, but it lacks the rapid copying functions that are valuable features in Excel.

Excel is for creating spreadsheets. While it does have some capabilities for creating databases, it is not designed to do so and does not have the required features. Microsoft Access is a database application and so it has all the facilities you need and can do things that Excel cannot do, or do them far more efficiently than what Excel can do for databases.

You can link Excel spread-sheet tables and Access databases, in either an active manner or in single passive copying mode. There is one annoying drawback with Access in that although each table looks like an Excel spreadsheet, it lacks Excel's rapid draw-down and other cell-copying features.

You need to choose which is the better for your purposes. Excel will allow you to create large-scale indexing and accounting spread-sheets but not related-tables with easy data--entry forms and reporting, all the province of the database.

Access is very powerful and lets you create applications easy to use, but its building-tools and techniques are by no means intuitive and its error-messages are impenetrable to any but very advanced users.
