There are several possible causes of this. First, the smell of a wet dog is special and distinctive, and many people find the odor to be annoying or offensive. This odor is caused by the dog's natural body odor being wicked to the surface and aerosolized by the bath - once the dog dries off the smell shoud dissipate.

If your dog was given a bath to get a strong odor off, you may have to repeat the shampooing and rinsing several times to get the stench out. This is particularly true if your dog was sprayed by a skunk or has rolled on some dead critter.

If none of the above works, you should take your dog to a veterinarian for an examination. Other causes of a persistent off odor include infections or metabolic diseases that will need a veterinarian's treatment.

Well, it depends on your dogs age. My dog is just turning 8, meaning shes now a senior sadly. She was constantly smelling like dead things, so my mom got her some vitamins, and covering that in peanut butter let her swallow it. Now she smells like a regular dog again, and baths are starting to be affective again!

Sometimes, you may suspect that the dog smells from its fur (which maybe true sometimes). But usually its their mouths that the stench is coming from.

(EDIT from original answer)

It is not always the mouth. I have been grooming dogs for 8 years. Often it is the ears or anal glands. If there is an infection in either of these three areas the smell can get quite noxious. Also many dogs develop skin problems from Allergies or poor grooming practices, which can also cause a bad odor. Cheap grocery store dog food, inadequate brushing and bathing, rolling in stinky stuff, you name it. Dogs that swim generally have a 'swimmer funk' from certain areas of the body such as the flaps of the underside of the neck, armpits, and between the rear legs when these areas do not completely dry (which can cause bigger issues than odor such as hot spots, fungal and bacterial infections.)

If your dog stinks, and he's been bathed and fully dried within the last few days, take him to the vet to identify the culprit.

This depends upon what kind of smell you are referring to. Wet dogs have a special and distinct odor all their own that many people find annoying or offensive - once the dog dries out the smell dissipates. Also, dogs do have a natural body odor, although this should be mild and pleasant.

Dogs can acquire foul odors through a variety of sources. My parents' dogs have always shown a fondness for rolling on very smelly dead critters and playing with skunks - a single bath, particularly with weak shampoo, will not be sufficient to get the stench out.

If none of the above appears to be what is happening to your dog, you should probably take him/her to the veterinarian for an examination. Other causes of persistent off odors include infections and metabolic diseases that would need a veterinarian's treatment.

To help get rid of dry skin, you can put a tablespoon of olive oil in each of his meals. Also, fish pills will help to fix dry skin. These will also make your dog's coat shinier and healthier.

How do get rid of horse poo smell on dog?

Bath your dog several times in hot water with a detorterizing/ scented shampoo. You could take a cloth and pour some vinigar on it and wet your dog down with it, that would get the smell out. Just be prepared to have a vinigar smelling dog for a while until the smell of vinigar wears off.
