Not all dogs are good with puppies. Puppies can be very rude and annoying. An adult with little patience or experience with puppies may expect the puppy to act like a well-behaved adult. They may attempt to correct the puppy for rude behavior, not realizing the puppy is much more fragile than another adult. This is especially true if the puppy is not her own. By instinct, mother dogs can tell if a puppy is weak and unlikely to survive, and may kill it for the benefit of the stronger pups in the litter.

On occasion, a spayed female will kill newborn puppies because she sees them as a threat to her territory and she reacts to them as she would to any other dog trespassing on her territory - with aggression.
