They may attempt to correct the puppy for rude behavior, not realizing the puppy is much more fragile than another adult. This is especially true if the puppy is not her own. By instinct, mother dogs can tell if a puppy is weak and unlikely to survive, and may kill it for the benefit of the stronger pups in the litter.
