Why would a narcissist complain about an item and say he doesn't want it because it is common?

Narcissists can be high on ego and see themselves in THEIR OWN light as being the best judge of ANYTHING. Often Narcissists are highly intelligent and find most other people around them lower on the scale of intelligence (even if the other person isn't) and it's purely a need for control and "being right" for the narcissist. Therefore, what words they utter such as an item being "common" because others may have it is their way of saying they are too good for that particular item and don't enjoy being mixed in with the common folk. Example: You're shopping for a car and most people have SUVs or larger cars and you want one. The Narcissist sees this as "too common" because you see them everywhere and prefers to be in a foreign made car so others will look at them and consider them highly successful (even though they may not be.) Narcissists are artfully deceiving and love to put on the persona they are intellectual, successful in life and have life by the tail whether it fits their budget or not. My husband did this all the time. He'd say that I never gave him enough, when in fact he never wanted any of the things that I got for him. At first he had excuses while we were dating, like he already had one or it was the wrong size. Later, once we married he said everything was cheap like me. He wanted me to pay him back for all the things that he had gotten for me in the past. It was so rediculous! But the point is that to him, his gifts were ways of impressing me and entrapping me, ways to control me and make me fall for him. Since in his little world everyone was evil like him, he saw my gifts as a way that I was trying to control him. Because of this, he had to refuse them. It was a threat to his control.
