The theory was, for a long time, especially during the Cold War, that a third world war was unwinnable by any participant, and would cause the end of the human race due to a massive nuclear winter. The so-called "MAD" capability (Mutually Assured Destruction) was guaranteed by the ICBM. But keep in mind that back at that time, the only conceivable type of "World" war would be a nuclear war. Now, a massive multi-nation conflict (even if it stopped short of a full blown "World War") would probably be fought with other than nuclear weapons, hence it is possible that a third World War - of a certain type - could be waged without ending humanity. But if such a conflict went nuclear, the end of humanity would be a very real threat, indeed.
