I was wondering why someone would cut open a Fentanyl patch and rub the gel on their gums?

to get high if you cut it open and lick it or rub it on your mouth its absorbed right away the patch is time release through the patch eight to twelve hrs so if some one is doing this its probably to get high

∙ 14y agoFentanyl is an extremely potent opioid similar to heroin. In fact, fentanyl powder is often sold as china white heroin.
The gel inside some fentanyl patches can be easily abused. One common route is to administer it sublingually or buccally by rubbing it on the gums. It can also be smoked like heroin off of foil.
This can be incredibly dangerous because of it's extreme potency and there have been many deaths recently caused by fentanyl use. Many people are using fentanyl intentionally, but many heroin users are being sold heroin cut with fentanyl or fentanyl passed off as heroin and overdosing because of it's potency.

This refers to a Fentanyl Transdermal patch, which is commonly used for chronic pain patients like myself that need continuous long-term opiate therapy. It is regulated by body heat, and is extremely effective. There are several doses - 12.5, 25, 50, 75 and 100mcg patches, all of which can be used with one another to make specific dosages. For example, though my normal dose is 100mcg, I typically have to use 200mcg, so I'll use 2 100mcg patches.

Absolutely not, unless you are using a Fentanyl patch, such as Duragesic or another brand name for the opiod-based transdermal pain delivery system , in which case, the Fentanyl will remain in your system, as provided by the patch, until about three to five days after you remove the last patch. There is no way for a urine drug test to determine whether the Fentanyl (opiod narcotic) it is detecting is that which was used to relieve your pain in surgery (or what was given to you by the anesthesiologist while you were asleep) or that which is entering your system now from the pain patch, except to say that at nineteen days "post op" nothing given to you in the operating room will still be in your system, so it would have to be something like a pain patch, unless perhaps you were given an injection of Fentanyl into your spinal area, such as an intrathecal injection, meant to linger there in that area and absorb over a period of many days and provide longer term pain relief, but you would certainly have been told and have had to approve a procedure of that sort and would therefore be aware that it was given to you prior to leaving the hospital/surgi-center as a longer-term pain reliever. In that case, a test would identify the Fentanyl in your system at likely many days (not sure how many, it would depend on the dosage and how long the medication was intended to linger there). For this reason, it is an extremely dangerous drug, and is restricted to hospital use in sedation and pain management, and in rare outpatient circumstances where patients have become too opiate competent/tolerant, and require fentanyl, usually delivered as a lozenge, such as Actiq, or in a patch, such as Duragesic.
