Why would the US be opposed to European control of Latin America yet actively pursue taking over Native American lands in the east and west?

Because one of those is an expansion of US power, while the other is an expansion of foreign power. Even americans who werent blinded by ideas of manifest destiny or war mongering would be hard pressed to come up with a reason as to why the US would want foreign powers to gain in strength.
