Most defoggers are fused, so start there. If it not the fuse perhaps it has become disconnected. Good Luck and Remember.

MAYBE YOUR BREAK SWITCH ON BREAK PEDAL IS BAD OR MAYBE A GROUND BUT I WOULD DEFINATLY CHECK YOU BREAK SWITCH
The Chevy Beretta biggest engine ever produced would be there 3.4 liter v6 which was actually faster then the camaro in the same year of production.
In my case the switch to the defogger was fried and had to be replaced. I would first determine where the problem is, then get a haynes manual and see how hard it might be to fix the problem yourself. If you can't do it then take it to the dealer.
Start with the lack of freon.
oil is thinner when its hot, that's why.
Brake light switch defective or out of adjustment.
Check that the wire on the rear defroster is connected to the defroster. If broken off repair it.
Torque converter lock-up solenoid is bad. Common problem with 1988 Beretta.
