"A bump under the tongue that comes and goes sounds like it may be a mucocele or mucus extravasation phenomenon. In this location, it can also be called a ranula. Essentially, a mucocele occurs when a salivary (spit) gland under the skin develops a leak in its tube or duct that guides the saliva onto the surface of the mouth. The spilled saliva collects into a small pool that produces a soft bump or lump and this bump may appear slightly bluish in color. The body tries to absorb this spill, but the damaged duct often continues to leak, leading to a waxing and waning course. Minor surgery is often needed to remove the saliva pool and the damaged salivary gland. This treatment is usually provided by an oral surgeon.?
Ive got that too, it gets bigger or smaller at times. My dentist said its a gland or calcium growth and is normal. Have it checked the next time you get your teeth cleaned to be sure though.
Mumps
The sublingual gland is the salivary gland found under the tongue.
The most common cause of a salivary gland lump is mumps, which usually affects children and typically causes painful swellings on both sides of the face. However there are many other causes of swelling in the salivary glands, for example salivary gland infection, salivary gland cancer, systemic diseases and drugs. The main clinical feature of salivary gland cancer is swelling in the salivary gland region though it does not exactly indicate that you have cancer as most salivary gland tumors are benign.Read more about salivary gland cancer herehttp://www.intelligentdental.com/2009/11/25/how-to-prevent-salivary-gland-cancer/

The largest salivary gland is parotid
There are 3 salivary glands; the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and the submandibular gland. The submandibular gland used to be the "submaxillary gland."
