momentum is caused by inertia. all objects have inertia, which means if they are moving at a certain velocity or are at rest they will continue to move at that velocity or remain at rest unless acted on by a force. Objects of more mass have greater inertia, so the amount of momentum is equal to the product of an objects mass and the magnitude of its velocity.

Momentum=mass x velocity

Mass is measured in kilograms

Velocity is measured in metres per second per second (ms-2 or m/s/s)

Momentum measures the amount of potential energy that is acting on or can act on an object. By calculating momentum physicists can determine the destination of an object by simply comparing its mass and how fast it is going (according to acceleration and negative acceleration (or deceleration)).
