So that it does not get caught up in the equipment or experiment that you are performing.
So it doesn't get caught in any chemical reaction, or moving machinery, such as 'rotovaps', or bunsen flames,
etc.,
As a chemist we do not worry about how glamorous you may want to be, but in the lab. safety is paramount.
Hair, tied, up ; NOT loose
Lab. Coats , buttoned up, NOT open
Goggles/spectacle/ glasses on ; Eyes protected (NB I use 'clear plastic 'blinkers' with my glasses in the lab).
Rubber / nitrile gloves on ; skin ( on hands protected).
In or adjacent to every lab. there should be an emergency (water) shower, for major spills.
You should tie up long hair in a science lab to keep it from dragging through your experiments, or being lit up by a Bunsen burner.
So your hair doesn't catch a flame and everything goes wrong. Hair wise. Though, I doubt you need to roll your sleeves up.
You should tie your back if you have long hair, make sure that the bunsen burner is standing up nice and sturdy and turn it off after using.
It's so hair doesn't dangle in the chemicals, are some are dangerous.
NO 'horse play ' in the lab. because you may break something. Glass. Spill something 'acid. Release something as gas. Burn something yourself (Bunsen burner) Get properly dressed for the lab. Lab. Coat; buttoned up , Rubber/nitrile gloves, Goggles. If you have long hair tie it back. Wear thick heavy shoes/trainers to protect your feet. Wear jeans. Under the lab. coat wear two or three layers of t-shirt. to absorb any splashed liquid before it gets to your skin. Yes!!! You may look ugly, but you are safe. Every lab. has an emergency shower , either inside the lab. or just outside the door.

The hair tie is made up of small peices of elastic covered in soft and strechy fabric sewn togather.
yes it's ok to tie it up
I don't think so. Your hair will not grow faster if it is tied up. If you tie it too tightly though you will do damage and could cause your hair to fall out because of traction on the hair.
