The capacitor is there to block any dc voltage that might be applied to the input terminal, which could cause damage or upset the biassing if it was allowed through to the base.

Capacitors are used to couple each stage of an amplifier to the next, to help remove ripple voltages from rectified AC power supplies and they are also used to tune circuits to get the required frequency response, such as a tone control in an audio amplifier, or an RF or IF amplifier in a radio receiver front-end. Capacitors are also used to bypass emitter resistors to improve the voltage swing and lower the AC output impedance of class A amplifier stages, and also used in negative feedback loops to stabilize an amplifier's open-loop gain.

A coupling capacitor is used in amplifiers, at input, output, or between stages, to allow the signal to pass while blocking any DC bias that might be present. Not using a capacitor in this case can upset the bias, i.e. operating point, of the amplifier.

What should be the value of capacitor at transistor amplifier circuit input?

How do you set up an RC circuit that will keep a 12V lamp on for 4 seconds after depressing the switch?

Use a transistor to drive a small relay. When the switch is pressed it should turn on the transistor and at the same time charge a small capacitor. Discharge the capacitor over 4 second time period with a resistor. You will have to experiment with resistors to find one that gives an acceptable discharge rate. Note, if the 12V lamp is running DC you can drive it directly with the transistor and forget about the relay.

DC blocking in a transistor is achieved by?

Including a series capacitor in the input and/or output circuit of the transistor. If the capacitor in the output circuit is omitted there will be a dc component in the output.
