Skylab was the first space station launched and operated by NASA from 1973 to 1979. The first space station was launched by the Soviet Union in 1971.The core module for the International Space Station was launched in 1998.
Not sure which you mean so: MIR Space Station, built by the Russians, was the first permanent space habitat. The first ISS module was called Zarya and it is a Russian module. The space shuttle followed shortly after Zarya's launch with Unity, the first American module.

On the 20th of November 1998, the Russian built module Zarya, became the first module of the International Space Station to be launched into space. A couple of days later, on the 4th of December, the fist American built module, Unity, was launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard the space shuttle Endeavour. The construction of the ISS should be completed by the end of 2010.
None of the space shuttles can travel to another planet, or even to the moon. They are only ever in earth orbit. STS-102 was a mission to the International Space Station and included two space walks outside of the station to assemble the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM)as part of the U.S.Destiny Laboratory Module.
The first module, Zarya, was sent into orbit on the 20th November 1998
December 4, 1998 during Space Shuttle Endeavours STS-88 Mission, it took the Unity Module into orbit.
