Medicaid is a health insurance program for individuals and families with low incomes and resources. It is jointly funded by the states and federal government and is managed by the states. The income limits for adults to receive Medicaid are extremely low (coverage for children only allows for a much higher income level). While gastric bypass may be a covered procedure, it is up to each individual doctor to determine if they would accept the Medicaid insurance (doctors do not have to accept the Medicaid insurance). In fact, doctors who accept Medicaid are generally limited, particularly in specialty fields (such as gastric bypass). Most doctors who will accept the Medicaid insurance are general or family practice doctors or pediatricians.

Yes! I had mine December 14, 2010 after 10 years of trying to get my various private insurance companies to pay for it. The authorization took only 8 days! It is a challenge to find a surgeon currently taking new medicaid patients, but I know of one in Parker, CO that is AWESOME and taking new medicaid patients.

Georgia medicaid will cover certain types of gastric bypass surgery if you have a high enough BMI and co-morbidities like high blood pressure, sleep apnea or Diabetes. Medicaid requires that the procedure be performed at a Bariatric Center of Excellence and the one I am aware of that performs the procedure for any of the HMO's (peachcare, wellcare etc.) is the Emory Bariatric Center.

Medicare coverage for a gastric bypass is very limited. They will only cover you if the bypass is recommended by your physician. If you are only looking to lose some weight then I'm afraid they wont cover you.
