Will a minor in possession of alcohol affect auto insurance rates? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Most definitely.
Answer
Not to scare you but it will devastate not only rates but gravely minimize your chances of even being sold a policy prior to age 26.
Companies like State Farm or 21st Century insurance will laugh when they read this on the NCIC (they have such a report on ALL who have a social security number) and tell you "get used to the bus until some time after your 26th"
Buy your insurance through a high risk carrier like Progressive insurance or AIG who built their buisnesses through high risk driver coverage:

Good Luck!!
Answer
The above answer is completely overblown. The fact is, with consulting numerous groups, basic auto insurance rates for a low cost car (2000 Malibu for example) for a 20-21 yr old, always insured driver, are about $100 extra for an MIP recipient. For example, without the MIP, rate was near $300. With MIP, the rate was near $460. Doable and nowhere near the offense cost of a DUI. It basically elevates the risk level of a driver in a SIMILAR way to an accident or insurance lapses. I think it's ridiculous the above people would base assumptions on the morality of the issue and not fact. Truth be told, you will pay extra but you're not going to be kicked in the ass if you're a generally low risk young person who has been driving accident free for some time.
Profile of driver used for quote: 20 yr old 4.5 yrs insured No accidents No traffic violations Mid-cost car (2000 Malibu) Low use (Student using for travel to classes, work) Cost increase: minimal
