No. An HD DVD will only play on an HD DVD player. This format was released in competition with BluRay. It lost the battle after about one year and was withdrawn from sale. There are few HD DVD players and discs around and none have been made for a number of years.

the demise of the HD DVD video format should not come as a surprise when the two formats are compared and closely examined. First, the quality of both in terms of picture and sound are a huge step up from a regular DVD in resolution. However, when further investigating Blu-Ray, the storage capacity is four times greater than that of High Definition DVD. In my opinion, this is perhaps the largest deal breaker for High Definition DVD.

Unless the disc has some sentimental value, there is probably little point in retaining it.

All domestic HD televisions have a variety of inputs. Most inputs will accept standard definition signals, such as composite, S-Video, component for example. many modern SD DVD players have HDMI connectors, also found on virtually all HD televisions. An SD signal delivered to an HD television will be processed, or scaled, to fill the screen properly. However, an SD signal displayed on an HD television is still SD. Although the image being shown is using all the pixels of the screen, the image resolution does not increase. In fact, there is always a slight loss of quality when an image is scaled. The final image may appear to be a little better than on a standard definition monitor or it may look a little worse but don't expect to see true HD quality.

There have been just one or two high definition DVD players capable of playing HD DVD and Bluray discs. If you have one, it will make it very obvious on the front panel that it will play both. It is unlikely that you own one of these, so the HD DVD player in question almost certainly plays HD DVDs and not Bluray. It will also play standard definition DVDs as well of course but if the movie is on Bluray, you're out of luck.

For clarity, HD DVD was the competitor to Bluray in the high definition disc war that ended in 2008. Both formats were capable of replaying high definition video and both were compatible with standard definition DVDs. Bluray was the victor in the war and the fatally wounded HD DVD players were withdrawn from the shelves quietly and without fuss. They were sold at 90% discounts in outlet stores. Sadly, those people who were tempted to buy one have since found that their collection of 4 HD DVD movies is never to be expanded.

Quick follow up to this post.
There are a huge amount of HD DVD movies to be found at Amazon.com
I was there last week looking for some new BlueRay movies and found a ton of HD DVD movies.
If you have a HD DVD player and are looking for movies to expand your library try here
just copy and paste to your browser if it does not come out as a link.

HD DVD discs can only be played in an HD DVD player. A standard DVD player will not recognize the disc. HD DVD is no longer manufactured with Bluray becoming the single HD disc format supported.

Unfortunately, HD DVD cannot be played in Bluray players either. If you want to playback HD DVD, Macgo Blu-ray Player could playback HD DVD and Blu-ray Discs.

Is there a difference in HD DVDs and Blu-ray?

HD DVD and Bluray were competing high definition disc formats. In 2009 HD DVD was withdrawn from sale as it became apparent that Bluray had won the HD disc battle. The two formats are not compatible so HD DVDs can only be played on an HD DVD player.

Do dvd's have to be marked HD in order to play in HD?

There are three storage formats for video discs: A DVD will carry standard definition video and will be described simply as "DVD". DVDs can be played on standard definition DVD players as well as either of the HD disc players mentioned below. Regardless of the player used, the image will always be standard definition. HD DVD is one of the two HD disc formats. The disc will be described as an "HD DVD". This format was withdrawn in 2009 when Bluray won the HD format war. HD DVD players and discs are still around but none are sold commercially now. These discs can only be played on HD DVD players. Bluray is the other HD video disc format. They will always be described as "Bluray". They can only be played on Bluray players and will not operate on standard DVD players. Nor will they play on an HD DVD player. Note: HD DVD is the product trade name of the now defunct high definition disc format. It is also commonly used in reference to an disc that supports high definition video. Therefore, is it sometimes used as a reference to Bluray. Although Bluray is a high definition DVD, it is NOT an "HD DVD". As the HD DVD format moves into the history books of television, the term is used more and more to refer to Buray even though it is strictly not the correct term.

What is better Blu-ray or HD?

Bluray and HD DVD are the two trade names for high definition discs and players. Bluray is by far the better choice for the simple reason that HD DVD was withdrawn in 2009. Bluray had won the HD format war so HD DVD quietly left the stores. There are a number of HD DVD discs around as well as the players. As the two systems are in-compatible, don't trash your HD DVD player just yet. It will still do a do job of playing the HD DVD discs you still have.

What kind of DVD player will play HD DVDs?

To play a high definition DVD, you need a high definition DVD player. There are two types available currently. HD DVD, developed by Toshiba is one and BluRay, developed by Sony is the other. They are not compatible, so an HD DVD will not play on a BluRay player and a BluRay disc will not play on an HD DVD player. BluRay looks like it is the winner in the format war between the two companies over the last years so it is likely that Toshiba's format will disappear in the coming months. Note that HD DVD can refer to the Toshiba format but it can also refer to high definition DVDs in general.

Can you play an HD DVD in a Blu-ray player?

The introduction of high definition discs saw two formats launched. Bluray is one and HD DVD was the other. The format war was won by the Bluray system and HD DVD was withdrawn in 2009. Both Bluray and HD DVD are high definition players but note that "HD DVD" is the name of the format and is confusingly close to the generic description of high definition disc players. Bluray and HD DVD are not compatible so a disc of one type will not play on the other format. There are a handful of dual format disc players but they were expensive and few were sold. If you have HD DVD discs then you need to hand on to an HD DVD player if you want to watch them. All high definition discs on sale now are Bluray and of course will need a Bluray player to play them.

Do bluray DVD players play HD DVD's?

No and HD DVDs have been permanently discontinued

Can a regular DVD player play 3D DVDs?

How do you tell if you DVD player is a HD player?

Which disk format did HD DVD loose out to?

bluray

Can you upgrade your HD DVD player to play Blu-ray discs?

HD DVD and Bluray are both high definition disc formats but they were not only competitive formats but incompatible formats as well. While the battle for the HD market was in progress a handful of players were sold that would support both formats. These players were expensive and very few were ever sold. Unfortunately, HD DVD only players will not play Bluray and Bluray players will not play HD DVD discs. It is still worth keeping HD DVD players as they are the only players capable of HD DVD discs.

Who is the main manufacturer of HD DVD?

Sony, did never manufacter, HD DVD's only BluRay's. HD DVD's aren't made any more.

Why is my HDMI hookup not looking like high def?

HDMI is a cable interface and does not in itself produce high definition signals. That is the case for any and all HDMI cables, regardless of the cost. To get an HD quality image, you must first get an HD source. Bluray players are HD but they will only produce HD quality if a Bluray disc is being played. Playing an SD DVD in a Bluray Player does not produce HD quality. That is the case even if the image is up-scaled to an HD format. Likewise, playing a DVD in a regular DVD player does not deliver HD quality even if the DVD player up-scales the signal to an HD format. If the source is an HD one, it is worth checking the settings to make sure it is set up to output HD rather than SD. Some models can be set to output only SD signals. Also, make sure the television itself is HD. There are a small number of "HD ready" televisions that will accept an HD signal but will reduce the resolution to suit its own low resolution screen.
