sometimes the cord will melt, but i haven't heard of them catching on fire. Actually, I was sitting at the computer with my friend uploading a video and the I phone 3gs was only plugged in for a half an hour. My friend said do you smelll that? it smells like burning plastic! I don't smell anything, then we looked down at my iphone and saw a flame about a 1/2 in tall coming out from the charger cable where it connects at the phone. So hell yes it can catch on fire.
