Honestly I'm not sure, but I don't see why it would make anything else slower. I would only imagine that if you're constantly adding/deleting various songs then maybe it would degrade the memory after a while or something, but even that would take thousands of write/rewrites. In general with normal use I don't think you'd have much of a problem.

In addition, I have a response to the original answer that this question received. I am leaving the original response intact below so you can see what I'm commenting on, but the original person that replied is very uninformed.

1. The iPhone does not use MAC OS X. The OS used to be referred to as OS X but it is not MAC OS X. This may be a minor point but shows the person's lack of knowledge.

2. It does not require defragmentation because it works off of solid state memory. Blackberry phones, Android phones, and other solid state phone do not require defragmentation either, so this point is entirely incorrect.

3. What does "require" defragmentation mean? Even for computers, it's often the right "choice" but when has it ever been "required" for anything?

4. How and why would using more space require the OS to prioritize other processes such as maps and make them load and process faster? If you mean that it prioritizes other processes in the sense that it gives them more time/processing power compared to the music being played, then maybe that makes some sense, but it doesn't make ANYTHING load or process faster. That's just silly. And think about it, why would they make a phone that waits until you load music before they made OTHER processes faster? It doesn't make sense because it's not true.

5. You obviously aren't the most neutral observer. You love your device, and that's great, but please don't spread lies or incorrect knowledge to other people. That's just not nice.

Other Person's Original Answer:

No. The iPhone is not like Blackberrys or other inferior phones. It uses MAC OS X and does not require any defragmentation. In fact, using up more space requires the OS to prioritize other processes such as Maps and in return will make them load and process faster. Feel free to fill up your iPhone to the last kb.

Long Live Apple.
