Actually it depends on who is doing the testing. Standard over the counter tests wont pick up on it but the labs that probation offices and other court ordered urinalysis tests go to will read it, and it doesnt take much! I am currently in drug court and a fellow client there just had a false positive from eating two poppy seed bagels the day before. They told our group that it came back positive for methadone, however there is a difference in the chemical make up and the tests they did concluded it was poppy seeds from food before they even asked him. I know every one says you need to eat an obscene amount of poppy seeds to get a false positive but they have adapted their tests to be very sensitive to anything that could even remotely be drugs in your system I am also on drug court and was placed in jail for two days because i ate JUST ONE poppy seed bagel. It does not take much to fail

WRONG!!! I have been clean for many, many years now. I eat a poppy seed/almond muffin every morning or at least 3 days a week. I took a UA and came up dirty for opiates. I have taken NO cold medicines, NO over the counter drugs, NOTHING. I went back to the testing agency and they said "YES, if you eat poppy seeds it will come up dirty for opiates"!!Wiki User
∙ 10y agoUnless you eat a ton of it, no. It used to, but the testing cutoffs have been significantly increased (by feeding people poppyseed and testing them) to the point where you have to actually do drugs rather than just eat poppy seed-containing foods.

YES! I am an RN on a jobsite where we do frequent drug tests on the employees. When a coworker and I had some downtime we had this discussion. I had eaten ONE Landshire Roast Beef and Cheese sandwich with poppy seeds on the bun for lunch. I went ahead and did the urine drug screen on myself approximately 2 hours after eating the sandwich and the result was POSITIVE for opiates!!!My coworker verified the result. It was negative prior to eating the sandwich. This was a pretty standard instant drug test so the answer is a big YES! My coworker and I also watched the episode of Mythbusters on Youtube that questioned this same thing and the guys were both negative for opiates prior to eating the poppy seed cake/ bagels and were both positive for opiates approximately 18 hours after eating the poppy seeds
