Survivability of HBC Different viruses will "survive" (remain infectious) longer in the environment. Hepatitis C virus (HBC) can remain infectious in the environment - including jewelry, on average, between 16 hours and 4 days. Disinfecting and Inactivating HBC Rubbing alcohol is not effective against HBC. The best method for disinfecting surfaces and jewelry is to thoroughly clean it with diluted household bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water).
